Inside Serif: Q&A with Producer Megan Cochran
We're thrilled to introduce the newest addition to the Serif team: Megan Cochran, a producer with a passion for film, storytelling, and making genuine connections. We sat down with her to learn more about what drives her, how she stays inspired, and why she believes powerful stories don’t require a Hollywood zip code.
Q: Tell me a bit about your career and how you got here.
A: Halfway through college I realized how much time I spent going to the movies and researching their behind the scenes content. I was amazed at how so many moving parts came together to tell an incredible and visually interesting story. I declared a Cinema Studies minor, started making my own short films, and never looked back. Being able to merge my favorite thing into my career is one of the greatest gifts.
Q: Why did you join the Serif crew?
A: I moved back to Columbus after working in Knoxville, TN and I wanted to understand the production scene here. On a walk one day, I saw a neon sign that read “FILM” inside of a building, so I looked it up and found that it was home to a production company. Little did I know I stumbled upon a tight-knit, elite team of creative and inspired folks. From the moment I met the team, I knew Serif was the place for me to make an impact and continue to grow in my career.
Q: What are some of your hobbies outside of work?
A: Playing and watching soccer (Columbus Crew and Manchester United), pickleball, snowboarding, walking, working out, traveling, reading, and going to see movies how they were intended to be seen—in the theater!
Q: How do you stay motivated and inspired?
A: Getting away from all of the noise. Turning off screens for hours at a time, going outside, moving my body and recharging. Reading, writing, and watching other films.
Q: What skills or qualities do you think are needed for success as a producer?
A: Hustle, warmth, anticipation, empathy, and being able to see the big picture as well as keep up with the minute details.
Q: What’s a misconception you think people have about working in production/the film world?
A: That you have to move to Los Angeles to make and tell important stories or work with world-class teams. That all exists right here in Columbus.
Q: An easy one—what’s your favorite coffee? Or coffee alternative if you’re not a coffee drinker?
A: Iced honey americano.
Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the production world?
A: Be a learner and a sponge, and be willing to jump in wherever you can. Be adaptable and open and friendly.
Q: Do you have any favorite books, movies, or podcasts that inspire you?
A: I’m a huge classic literature nerd. Books like East of Eden, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and To Kill A Mockingbird are the most worn on my shelf. Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019) made me want to be a filmmaker. And The Big Picture podcast has been as much a part of my film schooling as my minor was.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of work for you?
A: Connection! Within a team, to a story, and with the people we get to work with to tell it.
Megan brings vision, warmth, and deep enthusiasm for storytelling to every project she touches. She embodies what makes the Serif crew special. We're lucky to have her on board—and we can’t wait to see the impact she makes at Serif.
